Viruses and Immunity: Toward Understanding Viral Immunology and Immunopathology

چکیده
performing additional analyses as needed. The book is characterized by clarity and convenience throughout, including clear print, and good headings with boldface type for the subsections of each assay. This book should be a "must" in every clinical laboratory called upon to do any work in special hematology. It would be a very valuable source book for any specialist in hematology or for any laboratory worker concerned with the measurement of glycolytic or glucose-6-phosphate shunt enzymes and intermediates. It is highly recommended for those who have need for reference to such a laboratory manual. The tables in the back of the book giving the normal activities levels for a number of enzymes; the effects of temperature on the assay of several enzymes are a valuable compendium that will alone justify the purchase of the book by clinical laboratories.

Mucosal Herpes Immunity and Immunopathology to Ocular and Genital Herpes Simplex Virus Infections
Herpes simplex viruses type 1 and type 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2) are amongst the most common human infectious viral pathogens capable of causing serious clinical diseases at every stage of life, from fatal disseminated disease in newborns to cold sores genital ulcerations and blinding eye disease. Primary mucocutaneous infection with HSV-1 & HSV-2 is followed by a lifelong viral latency in the sensor...
متن کاملThe two faces of heterologous immunity: protection or immunopathology.
Immunity to previously encountered viruses can alter responses to unrelated pathogens. This phenomenon, which is known as heterologous immunity, has been well established in animal model systems. Heterologous immunity appears to be relatively common and may be beneficial by boosting protective responses. However, heterologous reactivity can also result in severe immunopathology. The key feature...
متن کاملVaccination against lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus infection in MHC class II-deficient mice.
The impact of prophylactic vaccination against acute and chronic infection in a Th-deficient host has not been adequately addressed because of difficulties in generating protective immunity in the absence of CD4(+) T cell help. In this study, we demonstrated that a broad CD8(+) T cell immune response could be elicited in MHC class II-deficient mice by vaccination with adenovirus encoding lympho...
متن کاملDirect visualization of cross-reactive effector and memory allo-specific CD8 T cells generated in response to viral infections.
CD8 T cell cross-reactivity between heterologous viruses has been shown to provide protective immunity, induce immunopathology, influence the immunodominance of epitope-specific T cell responses, and shape the overall memory population. Virus infections also induce cross-reactive allo-specific CTL responses. In this study, we quantified the allo-specific CD8 T cells elicited by infection of C57...
متن کاملClonal Exhaustion as a Mechanism to Protect Against Severe Immunopathology and Death from an Overwhelming CD8 T Cell Response
The balance between protective immunity and immunopathology often determines the fate of the virus-infected host. How rapidly virus is cleared is a function of initial viral load, viral replication rate, and efficiency of the immune response. Here, we demonstrate, with three different inocula of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV), how the race between virus replication and T cell respons...
